Farah describes the weekly perinatal nutrition program
In partnership with other health professionals, Farah helps to plan, implement and evaluate a perinatal nutrition program for at-risk pregnant women and new mothers up until 6 weeks of their babies’ lives. This program was developed to improve birth outcomes in this population, such as reducing the incidence of Low Birth Weight (LBW) (4.03b).
The perinatal nutrition program involves weekly group meetings, where program participants come and meet with a dietitian and public health nurse to share their experiences with pregnancy, talk about foods they are eating, and learn about healthy lifestyle choices (2.05m). The meetings also provide an opportunity for pregnant women to develop friendships and offer support to one another.
At the end of each week, program participants are provided with some food staples, like milk and bread, along with recipes and written resources to support a healthy diet during pregnancy (2.05g).
