Where do dietitians work and who do they work with?

Dietitians in Nutrition Care work in a variety of settings including, but not limited to:

  • Hospitals (may include acute care, chronic care and/or rehabilitation)
  • Community Health Centres (CHCs)
  • Family Health Teams (FHTs)
  • Homecare/Home health agencies
  • Long-Term Care homes
  • Private practice

Dietitians typically work as a member of an interprofessional healthcare team with a variety of healthcare professionals, which may include physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech language pathologists, social workers, diet technicians and food service staff, among many others.

Different settings and practice areas may provide more or less contact with specific health professionals.

For example, dietitians working with individuals at increased risk of dysphagia may work more closely with speech language pathologists whereas dietitians working in diabetes care may work with nurse educators specializing in diabetes management on a daily basis.
